End of Season - Review

By Howard Hughes

Congratulations to our 3 future U20 Counties internationals.

Well, that is that.

The North U20 Divisional programme is over for another season but the National U20 programme takes centre stage with 3 of the North lads off to Russia in June.

Myself, Dave, Matt, and Steve along with everyone else are extremely pleased for Will, Charlie and Connor and we hope you enjoy the experience with the National Squad. We also feel the same disappointment for Matt Denton who made it to the National Training sessions but was then de-selected.

As a Management Group we can only thank you all for your efforts, you (the entire squad) have been outstanding not only in your performances in the County programme but also your attitude and desire shown during our training camp at RAF Wittering.

Our performance against the Midlands was excellent and we (the Management Group) feel that we certainly didn't get the rub of the green on some selection calls but that in essence that is the basis of any selection & assessment process. One man's opinion of a superb all round rugby player might be another man's opinion of "average", it is all relative I guess.

Having 3 of the 4 County U20 finalists (Cup & Shield) doesn't necessitate we have a throng of top class U20 players, it does show however that the County U20 process in the North is strong and very much alive and kicking. The County U20 final was a really good game of rugby and to see many of the North lads showing their capabilities at HQ was awesome.

Some of you may be back next season, make sure you continue to perform to the best of your ability and those moving on from U20 rugby, cherish the experience and strive to continue your development.

As someone that's been involved in County/Divisional and National selection in the past believe me when I say it's sometimes becomes the hardest job in the world and certainly the cruellest because you end up looking for some reason not to pick a player than reasons for.

The margin between selection and non-selection is miniscule in most cases. That knowledge keeps you on top of your game when selected and unrelentingly optimistic and driven when not.

All the best
